Our plates are now filled with the fruit from Ronald Reagan's poisonous tree. The toxic seeds that have ruined American Society and the US economy were Reagan's ideas that government is bad, taxes are theft, the poor are lazy and undeserving, and education is an unhealthy "liberalizing influence". These ideas took hold and spread and, in a short quarter century, turned a prosperous, proud economy into the wreckage we have today. This was the intent of their originators - Ronald Reagan's "employers" - a small group of the very rich and very powerful who profit from the state of our economy.
Now, with the US in debt up to its eyeballs, its infrastructure crumbling, its houses of government paralyzed, a once proud party - the party of Lincoln - has elected a horde of imbeciles who, afraid to say the simple words, "We need to raise taxes", steadfastly refuse to enable government to raise the revenue needed to restore society to something resembling prosperity and order. And the other party murmurs only timid dissent.
I remember WWII. As a small child, I was impressed by the sacrifices my parents' generation made to support their country and the willingness with which they all pitched in to serve the common good. I believe this could happen again. I believe that Americans, faced with the truth about the state of their nation, would gladly make whatever sacrifices were necessary to save her.
But few of her leaders, few of those so ardently campaigning for election, are willing to give America a chance.
